It's been in the planning stages for awhile now. Governor Jon Huntsman Jr and his staff have always said they wanted to get the off-road perspective from those who knew it best. They had their chance this week as the Governor took a dirt bike ride with individuals from the organization Ride with Respect, along with Chad Booth of At Your Leisure, and saw first-hand the importance of proper land management and how to respect the land while using it at the same time.
The group rode out, some on dirt bikes, some on ATVs and Razors, on the Sovereign Trail System just a few miles north of Moab Utah. The trail is well made, well marked, and more importantly well managed. It was the perfect environment to show how people who know what they're doing and are passionate about something can create exactly the types of trails that allow resource protection right along side resource enjoyment.
Governor Huntsman talked and listened as new ideas were presented from riders and professionals. At the end of the day a feeling of understanding was evident from everyone who had participated in the day's events. Whether any of this will lead to real change is yet to be seen, but at least it's a step in the right direction that shows adaptability and respect from both the riders and their political representatives. We'll see what the future brings.
