The San Rafael Swell, a mammoth formation that juts from the earth hundreds of feet over the distance of more than a dozen miles. Long has it been a refuge for recreationists of all types for exploration and contemplation. for many years it was the poster child of the environmental movement for all of the perceived threats of off-highway recreation. Everywhere you looked it was the Swell that was the front lines. Instead of being closed however the BLM implemented a travel plan that created designated routes and close management from local riders and government officials.
It was said that a thousand years would pass before the damage of over use was corrected by nature. But in just under 5 years most of the problems have been washed away.
To witness this for himself Chad Booth, along with local riders and BLM managers, took a tour of the Swell to see the changes and improvements that turned San Rafael from the front lines of the environmental discussion into a success story of proper management and rider cooperation.
